When his father held court like this, a crowd of faces hanging on every word, Sal could believe he was once the light heavyweight champion of the world. Since Sal was only 12, he had no memories himself from that golden time nearly a decade ago. He heard the talk, though. People said he got a lucky shot, that he was dominated in the rematch and in the end only held the belt for fewer than a hundred days. But his father had been the champion. No one could take that away from him.

CRIMES
Infinite Worlds

Through concrete entrance ways off the Strip, they walked beneath No Trespassing signs into subterranean flood channels that snaked for miles beneath the gleaming casinos. They navigated the tunnels on the bicycle they shared, Gustav standing on pegs in the back and directing the flashlight through the darkness like it were a horn of fire in his hand and their bicycle a chariot rushing through an ancient twilight.

Allie held the painting at arm’s length and looked for something scary in it.

The drying canvas was blood-soaked with all the reds she had squeezed from the tubes now lying lifeless at her feet. Crimson and Radiant. Venetian and Cadmium Deep. Allie wanted to look into what she had created and feel her heart race. She wanted lifeblood itself smeared across the canvas. But all she could see—as always—was a clumsy thatchwork of brushstrokes, abstract and artless.
